UK Music Chart: April 29, 1972 Ft. Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash / A Thing Called Love
Johnny Cash at Number 14
We've reached the UK Singles Chart of April 29, 1972 and the highest new entry came from an infrequent visitor to the listing, American country crooner Johnny Cash.

His gospel-inspired A Thing Called Love jumped fourteen places into the Top 20, while there was no hanging around from The Rolling Stones as their latest release crashed straight into the chart at Number 18.

Just below them, at the foot of the Top 20, was the current single from reggae-pop outfit Greyhound with their catchy offering I Am What I Am.

Those three discs comprised the new entries to the chart. But there were plenty of climbers this week - all trying to stake a claim for the Number 1 spot, still occupied by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards with their rendition of Amazing Grace.

14: Johnny Cash: A Thing Called Love

For the first time in two and a half years, Johnny Cash was back in the British Top 20 - backed by the Evangel Temple Choir with the Jerry Reed composed, A Thing Called Love.

The track became Cash's biggest song on this side of the Atlantic, not only equalling the UK Number 4 peak of A Boy Named Sue, but also hitting Number 1 in Ireland and Number 6 in The Netherlands.

Meanwhile, although it scaled the heights of the American Country Chart, it failed to cross over to the Pop Hot 100 and also became Cash's last visit to the British Top 20.

18: The Rolling Stones: Tumbling Dice

A year after Brown Sugar had hit Number 2, The Rolling Stones were back with their latest single: the bluesy rock of Tumbling Dice.

Released on April 14, it didn't take long for the track to figure in the Top 20 - leaping in this week as a new entry to the chart at Number 18.

It was the first single release from the Stones' now classic album, Exile on Main St. , which itself was a British and American Number 1.

On the Singles Chart, however, Tumbling Dice would peak at Number 5 in Britain and Number 7 in the US.

20: Greyhound: I Am What I Am

Reggae band Greyhound returned to the Top 20 this week in 1972 with their third and final hit, the instantly memorable I Am What I Am.

With two previous Top 20 hits behind them, it seemed that the group would continue to enjoy further success in the years to come. However, this 45 only managed to peak at this week's Number 20 before falling back down the chart.

The band then faded from the limelight when succeeding singles, such as Dream Lover and Floating, failed to make any impact at all.
