Presenting the UK Top 20 music chart for the week ending 30 September, 1972
After three weeks at the top of the UK chart, Slade relinquished the Number 1 spot in favour of David Cassidy
who eased up two places with his cover of How Can I Be Sure?
Elsewhere, the Top 20 was relatively quiet with only two new records making the breakthrough into the listing. More glam rock came courtesy of the now-disgraced Gary Glitter
, while Peter Skellern
's first and biggest hit, You're A Lady, made its debut.
Most of last week's new entries enjoyed further upward movement - the biggest leap coming from Lieutenant Pigeon
who would be vying for the Number 1 position within the next fortnight.

14: Gary Glitter: I Didn't Know I Loved You (Till I Saw You Rock and Roll)
Gary Glitter returns to the Top 20 with his second hit which would eventually peak at Number 4.
I Didn't Know I Love You (Till I Saw You Rock and Roll) also entered the US Top 40 at Number 35.
18: Peter Skellern: You're A Lady
In a complete contrast to Glitter's offering was the debut chart entry for Lancashire-born Peter Skellern, You're A Lady.
Enhanced with the inclusion of a brass band and additional choral vocals, the song is a romantic ballad with a nostalgic, homely quality.
Although Skellern would briefly return to the UK charts during the 1970s, this is probably the song by which he will be mostly remembered. It would go on to peak at Number 3, as well as enter America's Billboard Hot 100 at Number 50.
We would have to wait another three years before he returned with Hold on to Love, although his exceptional songwriting skills were successfully employed over the following thirty years in television, radio, theatre and later, in choral music through his decision to join the priesthood.
