Uncovered: The UK’s Favourite 70s Number One Songs

Queen / Rock Band
At Number 1: Queen

Sentimentalism for decades past is an important slice of programming offered by both radio and television stations, so it was no surprise that ITV in the UK would poll the British public and produce a chart of the nation's favourite Number One songs of the 1970s.

This nostalgic glimpse into the rear-view mirror of several of the decade's top tunes was accompanied by short commentaries by some of the people who produced the music. The memories were eye-opening, funny and sombre in equal measure - much like the hits that made it into this viewer-driven Top 20.

Of course, you only have to look at any of the top selling singles from any week of any year to understand that public taste is a strange thing. So it is with this poll result. The Seventies had some very impressive chart-toppers, many of which are missing from this listing.

All the same, there are some classics here which are augmented further by the tie-in album which contains a massive 68 tracks.

  • 1.  Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen (1975)
  • 2.  Dancing Queen – ABBA (1976)
  • 3.  Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon and Garfunkel (1970)
  • 4.  Heart Of Glass – Blondie (1979)
  • 5.  Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush (1978)
  • 6.  I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor (1979)
  • 7.  Night Fever – Bee Gees (1978)
  • 8.  Without You – Nilsson (1972)
